Sterling CIS

Using Sterling CIS is a great way for self-employed contractors working in the construction industry,
(including Rail construction) to be paid on time and regularly whilst taking assignments through a

recruitment agency. Sterling CIS best fits those;
- Contracting within the CIS scheme only in any job role from plumbers to surveyors
- Who are already self-employed but want more assignments through recruitment agencies
- Work in the construction industry and considering becoming self-employed
- Who want to reduce paperwork headaches and be confident that all Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) tax deductions are taken care of and paid to HMRC
- Self-employed CIS contractors working in rail
Traditional self-employment
The hassle of running your own business, quoting, generating and chasing invoices, waiting 30 days for payments, insurance costs, completing tax returns and finding a good accountant who can produce a set our yearly accounts can all place extra strain on you. Also you will find that many recruitment agencies are not prepared to deal with sole traders directly.
Decisions, decisions
Nowadays, the supply of labour for major construction projects is usually handled by recruitment agencies. The 'big jobs' offer good hourly rates and the security of work for some time. Sometimes taking an assignment through an agency and being paid under CIS may mean a compromise for you; do you agree to be paid on a PAYE basis and lose the benefits of being self-employed, or turn down the assignment?
Have the best of both worlds: the jobs and self-employment status with Sterling CIS
Agencies find it easier to deal with contractors like Sterling CIS because we reduce their administration for sole traders. By joining us you have access to more opportunities as a Sterling CIS sub-contractor. You can remain self-employed, and be able to claim back all legitimate business expenses at the end of the financial year.
There’s no chasing agency invoices because we obtain the funds for the assignment from the agency. Your CIS payments are also processes by us every time and the relevant CIS tax deductions are paid to HMRC on your behalf; to reduce your administration burden.
How you are paid through Sterling CIS
Sterling CIS is different to CIS payroll companies. For each CIS construction assignment we sub-contract your services to the recruitment agency. We invoice the amount from the agency, prepare invoices and receive the gross amount from the agency. Each time we process a payment we take a small mark-up to cover the service we provide. There is no need to invoice us, as we are a self-billing company.
The relevant CIS tax deduction is taken and then paid to HMRC on your behalf. The remaining funds are then transferred to your account via a same day payment transfer and a free text message is sent to you confirming the amount. The payment will clear by the end of the banking day. A remittance advice is then sent to you, by email the same day you are paid.
National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are not taken from your income; you need to organise payment of these separately by setting up a small weekly direct debit with the NI Contributions office. You will need to pay the remainder after completing your self-assessment.
Compared to traditional self-employment, being paid under Sterling CIS route means you;
- As a CIS sub-contractor you will receive a regular income; you do not need to wait 30 days for payments
- Reduce paperwork and administration; we take care of invoicing the agency and payment administration
- Keep on top of your tax paperwork; we collect CIS tax deductions and pay these to HMRC on your behalf
- Save money; we provide Public Liability, Employers Liability and Personal Accident Insurance as standard
